King Cake Pancakes: A Festive Breakfast for Mardi Gras


Today marks Mardi Gras, a day-long celebration that culminates with a colourful parade through the confetti-filled streets of New Orleans. This very same holiday coincides with Shrove Tuesday, which for Christians, precedes the period of Lent before Easter.

At first glance, each feast is defined by its own traditions and foods. But in essence, they’re fairly similar and are used to celebrate the same thing: an opportunity to eat as much as you please of the most decadent dishes prior to six weeks of fasting. Oh how we love a good excuse! So what better way to celebrate both holidays at the same time than by sampling their most iconic foods –in one! That’s where King Cake Pancakes come in.

A combination of the Mardi Gras King Cake (a sprinkle-glazed dough filled with cinnamon, pecans, raisins, and brown sugar) with Shrove Tuesday’s pancakes, they’re the yummiest and most festive way to start your day. Scroll down for the easy-to-make recipe!


1 cup of flour

2 tbsp brown sugar

2 tsp ground cinnamon

2 tsp ground nutmeg

1/2 tsp baking powder

1/2 cup raisins

1 egg

1 cup of milk

1 tbsp melted butter


1.In a large bowl, mix the dry ingredients such as flour, sugar, nutmeg, cinnamon, and baking powder.

2. Mix your wet ingredients in a smaller bowl, and slowly add them to the dry ones little by little, making sure that there are no lumps in the batter.

3. Add the raisins when everything is mixed well, and stir once again until incorporated.

4. Place a lightly oiled medium-sized pan onto the stove, over medium to high heat.

5. Ladle 3-4 tbsp of the batter into the hot pan and cook, flipping to the other side once you see the first one has become golden.
