DIY Sunday: Make Easter Glam with Glittered Eggs

Easter is just a week away and with that holiday on the horizon, it’s time to get crafty. Of course, food, family, and the feast that usually ensues is the focus, but decorating the eggs is often what makes all of it fun. Traditionally, they are to be painted a deep shade of red –the hisotry of which you can read all about by clicking here!

You don’t have to stick to tradition because in certain cases, rules are made to be broken. So rather than putting all of your eggs in one colour basket, try a new look and glam them up with glitter!

Materials:

Hard boiled eggs, white

Egg dyes or acrylic craft paint

Large glitter flakes (not the fine, dust kind)

White glue, dries clear

Egg holder

Eggprep

Instructions:

1. Colour your eggs with the dye shades you have selected, according to packet instructions. Let them dry. If you are using craft paint, apply it to one side using a sponge brush and let dry, then pain the other side and rest it on dry side.

2. Take your freshly coloured, but dried eggs and place them in an egg holder. With a crafts sponge brush, apply the glue to the top half of the egg I’m a downward motion, sweeping less as you reach the bottom in order to create an ombré effect.

3. Before it dries, sprinkle generous amounts of glitter onto the glue-covered end of the egg. Make sure to place a napkin or paper underneath to catch the flakes that didn’t stick, and re-use them!

4. Place it in the egg holder to dry for at least 30 minutes, with the glittered end facing up.

DIY Sunday: Crafting Tape Gift Tags

It’s time for another installment of DIY Sunday: one of the more fun blog posts to write and make because it means it’s time to get creative! This week, you’ll be learning how to make craft tape gift tags. They can be used at any time of the year, for any event, and with any item. Clip it on to a box, or a paper bag, and watch your wrapping rise to the occasion.

What’s great about these, is that they can be personalized. Depending on the stamp you choose to use, they can spell out the recipient’s name or just say thank you (loot bag tags, right?). Not to mention, there are so many options of tape! So take out your sharpest scissors and ink pad, and start making yours. Here are all the secrets:

Tools:

Patterned Crafting/Scrapbooking Tape

Stock paper, beige or ivory

Mini coloured clothespins

Stamp

Ink pad, black

Scissors

TAGprep

Instructions:

1. Find the template of a tag you like online, and print it. Cut it out, and trace its outline onto the stock paper that you have chosen.

2. Cut that out as well using your scissors.

3.Measure a piece of tape that covers the bottom of the tag from end to end, and rip it so that it is a little longer. Line it up perfectly parallel to the edge of the tag and stick it on, wrapping the edges around to the back.

4. Attach the mini clothespin to the tag, and you can clip it on to bags, ribbons, boxes, and cards!

The 5 Ps of an Organized (and Pretty) Desk

Whether you have a cozy little cubicle or have snagged some prime real estate with that corner office, chances are that you are working at a desk. And let’s be honest, they’re never large enough. 3. [P]aper Weight: Keep those papers and documents neatly stacked and stop them from flying everywhere with a paper weight. Sure, you can choose the classic half-sphere but why not try a natural crystal? It not only looks stunning as it captures the light, but is also said to provide good energy (perfect for when you’re rushing  to meet those deadlines). 4. [P]atterned Folders: Another way to keep loose papers in one place is with folders.They have a tab to keep things clearly labeled and categorized, and make it easy to find the files you need. Hassle-Free Holiday Ornament Storage

While decorating the Christmas tree is always fun, it can’t last forever. So when it’s time to pack up that pine, you also need to find a place for those ornaments!

In my experience, I’ve always ended up opening the box in December only to find that a few of my favourites have been crushed. And let’s face it, with all the gift-shopping, party-hosting, and cookie-baking of the season, no one has the time to dash to the store for a new set. Here are two ideas to make things easier:

Think Inside the Box(Ideal for large ornaments):
Find a box large enough to fit all of your ornaments. Then:
1. Line the bottom with crumpled tissue paper
2.Place the ornaments one beside the other, being careful to not pack them too tightly
3. Put tissue paper in between each row, horizontally, and more crumpled sheets when stacking

The Ribbon Ring(Great for smaller,delicate ornaments):
If starting the holiday season with a box full of broken glass isn’t bad enough, imagine all the work you have to do if the ornaments are tangled! To avoid this:
1. Take a piece of ribbon(yep, it can even be one from an already-opened gift), and string the ornaments on it one by one(as seen in the picture)
2. Once they’re all lined up, loosely tie the ends of the ribbon together to form a ring, and to make sure the ornaments don’t slide off
3. Place them in a box lined with tissue paper

So there you have it! Holiday decor storage made easy, so you can spend more time sipping on Egg Nog than sweeping-up glitter and glass.

In today’s world, we’re so caught up with owning the latest model, the most recent upgrade, and the newest thing there is! In this constant quest for the fresh, we forget about old world charm and the sentimental value that comes with vintage items. The little trinkets from childhood, and grandma’s picture perfect frame all tell a story, they revive memories that transcend present day duties, worries, and concerns. Even that fantastic find you picked up at the flea market will do!

Bottom line, antiques are a great addition to any space. Just keep these pointers in mind:

Search and rescue: When looking for the perfect piece, you may have to do a little digging. Whether it’s in your parents’ attic or weekend garage sales,  scour every corner and dig in every box until you find the one that screams “pick me”! At the risk of sounding cheesy, beauty is often found in the most unlikely of places.

Strength doesn’t always come in numbers: Now, you don’t want to fill your space entirely with ancient items. It’s not a museum. One piece too many, and people will be lining up to see your collection. Instead, fuse the old with the new, and inject antique flair through a chair, a jewelery holder, or eclectic wooden frames.

Don’t fear a fixer-upper: See something you like but it has seen better days? This is a perfect opportunity to make it your own –reupholster a chair, or coat the new find in paint.

The Craft of Choosing Coffee Table Books

BooksCoffee tables come in all shapes and sizes: round, square, glass or wooden. They’re the heart of our living rooms, the center for chit-chat, and most reliable foot rest we know.

Once you have yours picked out, now comes the fun part: what to put on it? And no, I don’t mean cups that leave marks –there are coasters for that so stop complaining and think of the decorating instead. I’m talking about coffee table books! The conversation starters, the reflection of your interests and personality. To help you choose the best, here are a few guidelines to keep in mind:

Covet the cover: we know better than to judge books by their covers, but for the purposes of decorating, you want something that is close to art. Look for those with large, captivating photographs and simple, catchy titles.

What gets you going?: is it fashion that peaks your interests? Then these Chanel or Harper’s Bazaar books are suitable.  Have a love for art and architecture? Go for an anthology of Frank Lloyd Wright’s works. Like photography, cars? The point is to stick to your personal interests and the books that reflect them. That way, you’ll enjoy leafing through them and if intrigued guests ask questions, you’ll be prepared and happy to answer them!

Less is more: when it comes to text, keep it to a minimum. Reading is for the bed, bath, and beyond but just not at the coffee table. The books you keep here should tell a story, talk about a topic, or person all through photographs and small captions.

And don’t forget! Magazines, whether a stack of vintage ones or the most recent issues, make a great addition too. Not to mention, they’re considerably cheaper.
