Short and Sweet: The Comeback of Collar Necklaces

collarnecklace

Like many fashion trends, collar necklaces keep making their way in and out of style. Some years, it’s the pendant and tassel that take the stage, while others, shorter ones that sit perched up high on the neck are all over the runway.

This season, it seems like it’s once again best to keep things short and sweet. With a comeback from the 90s, those woven plastic chokers worn by teens have graduated into a more mature and sleek look that is often clad in silver or gold. The idea stays the same, but what you wear it with shouldn’t! Gone are the days where it’s acceptable to pair it with a cropped tee and denim cutoff shorts. Instead, go for a modern pencil skirt and those red-soled Louboutins.

If you’re interested in getting your very own collar necklace, here are a few great options.

Sleek and Silver: For a polished and professional look, opt for a necklace with few details. The Modern Classic Metal Collar from Ann Taylor is a perfect example! There isn’t much to it, but the silver and pearl accents are ones to applaud. It’ll look fantastic with a white t-shirt and jeans, or equally as great with an LBD.

Getting Twisted:  Change things up with this twisted Gold-Tone Knot Necklace from Michael Kors. It can be the staple to any summer dress, or an essential addition to your look for a night out on the town. And when your necklace demands so much attention,  keep all other accessories minimal.

On the Fringe: Aiming for bohemian flair? Then a fringed collar necklace is your solution. Stella and Dot has a fantastic option, with gold accents and fun details. So with sandals and a beach bag in tow, you’re ready for summer or at least some warmer spring temps (whenever those decide to roll around).

Which of these three is your favourite?

Making You Blush: The Season’s Best Shades

Fall_makeup

As your summer sun-kissed glow fades, so too should your bronzer! The replacement? A blush. To help you make the transition from tanned to rosy, here are some of the best colours to sweep over your cheeks.

Think Pink: There’s nothing more classic than a pink blush. Whether it’s as subtle as the shade of  ballet slippers or as fiery as fuchsia, these palettes are perfect for lighter skin tones. MAC’s Pro Longwear Blush in  Rosy Outlook will do the job!

Rockin’ Reds: If you’re looking to make a stronger statement or for darker complexions, choose a bordeaux  or red-hued colour. It’ll add sultry flair and surely turn heads! Why not try Marc Jacobs’ Shameless Bold Blush in Tantalizing Magenta?

Mix it Up: To get the best of both worlds, and for those who just can’t part with the tanned glow, you can go for a marbled option. These have blush-toned pigments, as well as bronzy bits. Take a look at the Hourglass Ambient Lighting Blush from Sephora if you think it’s all too good to be true!

So there you have it! There’s plenty to choose from because unless you’re jet-setting to tropical places as the temperatures drop to keep that summer tan intact, it’s time to swap your bronzer for blush.

A Walk on the Wild Side: Leopard Print Coats

When shopping for a coat, we tend to stick to the basics. Play it safe. Opt for shades of grey, somber black, or bright winter whites. But why not be daring? In a season when the weather is gloomy, have some fun with your outerwear.

The easiest way to do that? Just walk on the wild side, with a leopard print coat. It’s luxurious, bold, and great for bundling up in style. Not to mention, the New York Times Style Magazine stated in their August issue that “leopard, the naughtiest of prints, is back in fashion. But the look is tailored and covered up”. So with a green light from the fashion Gods, it’s time to try this new trend. Here are three things to keep in mind when picking up the right piece:

Keep it Cool with the Colour: You may never see a real leopard sporting blue spots, but your coat should be! Try to stay away from the classic brown/camel combination that animal-printed fabrics tend to have. Going for something that’s of a different (yet subtle) shade will add sartorial flair, rather than have you looking like you’re wearing your prey. The perfect example? The Ann Taylor LOFT coat that I’m also wearing in this post.

Be Picky with Pattern: Play around with size and scale. While a smaller print can be elegant and delicate, a larger one can be more modern and edgy. This Michel Kors coat is ideal, abstracting a classic and adapting it for everyday life. Throw on some jeans and black leather boots and you’ll look like you just walked off the pages of a magazine.

Envision the Ensemble: When putting it all together, be mindful of the details. The coat should be the star of the show just like a leopard in the wild, so don’t steal its spotlight. Pair it with denim, dress pants, and solid coloured tops. When it comes to pattern,  stripes or houndstooth (like the skirt pictured above) are your best bet –nothing too busy.

Now that you’re armed with advice, get out there and hunt down your coat!

Dressing for the Races!

Queen'sPlate2014

Horse races: they’re fast, fun, and a chance for you to put your best fashion forward.  So while the stallions are galloping around the track, you can strut around in the finest of frocks. I say this because attending the Queen’s Plate is a yearly tradition for my friends and I, and always a chance to come up with something new to wear. Here are some tips that can help you turn into a track-side sweetheart who not only wins her bets, but also the admiration of equally stylish guests.

The Best Dress: We all love a flattering, form-fitting dress but this is not the place to sport it because horse races are prestigious events, not a downtown dance floor. So instead, opt for ones that taper at the waist and flare out at the hemline –a perfect 1950’s silhouette.

Choose the Shoes Wisely: As tempting as stilettos may be, stay away and slip on wedges, platforms, or flats! There’s a whole lot of walking to do –from that far-away parking lot to the red carpet, the pre-race festivities to the stands, and everything in between. Clearly, comfort has to come first.

Head-Turning Hats: Wearing a hat is a staple for the races –and the bigger, the better! Choose fun shapes and interesting colours. Better yet, opt for a fascinator that is worthy of royal envy.

For Your Eyes Only: While it may be easy to assume that a wide-brimmed hat can keep the sun out of your eyes, think again! Leave sunglasses behind and you’ll also squint your way through photos and say goodbye to seeing that winning horse race across the finish line –especially if you’re wearing a fascinator that offers no shade. To avoid this, wear sunnies that complement your dress and are simple enough blend in with an already eclectic ensemble.
