Dare to Wear: Denim Overalls

Nora_Ursulescu

While frilly sundresses and skirts are always fun to wear when the temperatures rise, there’s something even better about sporting an unexpected piece. This season, overalls are making a comeback. So buckle up a pair and strut over to all your summer activities decked out in denim. Here’s how to style them for whatever your social agenda has in store:

Take Me Out to the Ball Game:  Hit a fashion home run the next time you’re in the stands by wearing overalls. Sure, it’s not your typical shorts-and-a-tee combo but this style curve-ball will turn heads. To make your mark, pair them with a cap,  jeweled baseball shirt a la J Crew, and your favourite Converse sneakers. It’s a combination that keeps things casual for the game, yet cool enough for celebratory drinks if your team wins!

The Backyard BBQ: Between the burgers and beverages, your outfit also needs to be on point! So whether you’re hosting or attending a summer BBQ, dress to impress. Wear the overalls with a patterned top, statement necklace, and a great pair of sandals — no heels or wedges here. Sinking in to the grass is not a good look!

Downtown Patio Dining: This is where you can take things to the next level. To fit in with the chic city-center crowd, throw on a silk collared blouse underneath, and chunky-heeled shoes on your feet. This pair from Zara is perfect — they’ll elevate the casual denim for a fancy night out!

Welcome Summer with Sunny Frames from Warby Parker

When we think of summer, we often associate the warmer weather it brings with shorter hemlines, long weekends, and parties by the pool. But the fun doesn’t have to end there! You can jazz up your eye-wear. That’s right, make a spectacle of yourself and sport frames in daring colors, and cool shapes to match your sunny disposition. With endless prescription frames and sunnies to choose from, Warby Parker has you (and your eyes) covered!

Known for their affordable men and women’s glasses that don’t sacrifice style for price, the American company is based online, but opened a number of showrooms,  and recently expanded to the Canadian market. How great is that, eh? And because with every pair purchased one is also donated to someone in need, why not stock up on a few –a splurge you can finally feel good about! Here are four styles from their newly launched Summer Collection 2014 that are sure to suit your taste:

For the Guys:

Green With Envy: Tinted in a green shade that promises to make others jealous, the Ormsby Whiskey Tortoise frames will look great paired with a denim shirt, khaki chinos, and slim loafers.

Timless with a Twist: The rectangular shape of the Mitchell Olivewood frames is a classic! Sure, we’ve seen this style worn by scholars, celebrities, and the cool downtown crowd, but you’ll fall for these glasses’ amber shade, reminiscent of tropical sunsets. Throw on colored shorts, and a laid-back white tee for an effortless look.

And the Gals:

Spot On!: With a rounded shape and brightly speckled texture, these playful Lyle Hanalei Tortoise frames are a statement piece on their own! So when planning your outfit, stick with neutral and patternless frocks from head to toe. But if you dare walk on the wild side (as these glasses should inspire you to), wear them with a fun denim romper!

Show Your Stripes: The Banks Striped Sassfras are sunglasses fit for a diva! To play up the glamor that they evoke, opt for a white button-up blouse tucked into a midi pleated skirt for an outfit that is oh-so-Audrey Hepburn.

Let There Be Light: Wearing Winter Whites

WinterwhiteBecause there’s still snow on the ground and temperatures are refusing to climb, I’m going to assume that it’s perfectly acceptable to publish a winter post. And what better way to beat the cold weather blues than by talking about fashion! Sure, we’re all stuck wearing our puffy parkas and cankle-inducing  snow boots, but there are ways to snap out of this wardrobe slump.

How? By sporting the classic winter-white outfit. This can be tricky, so follow these simple rules and you’ll be showing winter who’s boss.

Texture and Layer: We’ve already established that mother nature unleashes her wrath in winter with teeth-chattering cold, so the key to making this look work is layers. You can’t just throw on a top and coat and be on your way. Instead, try a crisp white-collared shirt, cable knit sweater, and cashmere or wool coat. Layering will not only keep you from turning into a (stylish) icicle, but the different textures and materials will make you the master of sartorial flair.

Be Shady: Alright, the look you’re going for needs to be worthy of an editorial spread. So you’ll want to stay away from an ensemble that is so bright and white that it makes people wonder if you swap style tips with Mr. Clean. To achieve the right balance, opt for a combination of off white-hues, beige, and cream.

Accessories:  Though mixing and matching has earned its top spot on the trend list, this is where you’ll want to stick to all things simple. Because you’ll likely be sporting shades of white, choose bags and shoes in a light brown or plain black to avoid looking like a kaleidoscope of colour.

With these tips in tow, you’re ready to rock the snow covered sidewalks!

Staying Cozy in the Cold: The Clothing Guide

If you live somewhere in North America, then you’ve felt it! The teeth-chattering cold that seeps into your bones and leaves you longing for your cozy bed. And when even Atlanta feels like the Arctic, how do you stay warm? Here are a few tips to make sure that you’re ready to withstand winter.

Part Ways with Denim: Even though jeans are a year-long wardrobe staple, you better keep them in your closet for now! They won’t block out the cold –if anything, the fabric only absorbs it. So opt for cotton jeggings instead, or a great pair of lined wool pants.

Layer-Up, Buttercup!: Let’s face it, flimsy fabrics just won’t cut it in sub-zero temps. You need to layer your clothing like a well-built cake. Slip on tights underneath your bottoms, and have at least 3 items on the top (camisole, long sleeve shirt, sweater/cardigan). Lucky for us, layering is in style so have fun with it! Mix patterns and prints, and combine colours.

Choose the Right Shoes: Stilettos may be stylish, but you’ll slip on icy sidewalks. Instead, lace up a pair of insulated boots that will also keep your toes nice and toasty.

Add on some Accessories: Keep it all under wraps with scarves, hats, and mitts that are lined,  and put away those lovely leather driving gloves until spring!

3 Coat Styles to Cozy Up To

Though it seems far too soon, winter weather is on its way! So when a cardigan or light leather jacket are no longer enough to keep us cozy, it’s time to bundle up in a coat. But often, we choose warmth over style and end up looking like we left the house with a down comforter on.

For all of us who are guilty of it, there are solutions! Yep, you can be warm and fashionable, toasty and trendy, and not one without the other. Here are three styles to keep you on the right track:

The Pretty Puffer: The puffer coat is one of the best options if you want to stay warm –it’s tough enough to make it through a blizzard. But it can also leave you looking like the Michelin Man. To avoid this, opt for a slimmer silhouette that is cut closer to the body and isn’t stuffed with so much down that the rolls threaten to burst. Michael Kors’ take on this classic should do the trick!

In the Trenches: Trench coats are always on trend, whether it’s during the sunnier days of spring or crisp autumn. So why not take it into the winter? Wearing it in a wool version will keep you warm, and the belted waist will add some much needed definition when sporting bulky sweaters. If you’re looking for inspiration, look no further than ASOS’s textured black coat.

On the Edge: Break all the rules with an edgy coat! Zippers, leather –the more the merrier, and each element adds dimension to to often plain outerwear. You’ll look cool, but that doesn’t mean you’ll be cold. Zara’s rendition is a must-have!
